Uplistsikhe Cave Town

Uplistsikhe Cave Town, meaning “Fortress of the Lord” in Georgian, is an ancient rock-hewn settlement nestled on a rocky massif, 15 km east of Gori along the banks of the river Mtkvari. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it boasts a rich history dating back to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age. This well-preserved complex features dwellings, a chapel, and a theatre carved into the soft rock, offering a glimpse into the region’s ancient urban life. Uplistsikhe stands as a testament to Georgia‘s archaeological heritage, with partially renovated structures that witnessed key events in Georgian history.
